HEC United: a world tour of HEC Alumni!

A neuroscience researcher at Tel Aviv University, a Web 3.0 entrepreneur in Tokyo, a sustainable energy planner in Senegal, the manager of a luxury hotel in Cairo. What can they have all in common? They are all HEC alumni! And there are thousands more around the world.

Going abroad to meet HEC alumni there, interviewing them and publishing their stories: that is the purpose of HEC United, the club to which we will dedicate our personal gap year next year. The objective: strengthening the links within the HEC community while providing inspiring stories and pathways to students who are wondering about their future career paths.

We are Matthieu, Samuel and Pierre-Augustin, three students of the Master in Management. After two first years of school and one year of internships that have all been very exciting but thought-provoking as well, we have decided to take a step back to better grasp the diversity of the career paths offered by HEC. After our respective internships and exchanges, we came to the conclusion that many opportunities are still unknown to students on campus, and especially abroad. And this is despite the fact that, in a survey circulated in 2019, 69% of students stated they wanted to spend part of their career out of France, and the Covid years have even further strengthened that feeling.

After a bit of research, we found the HEC United project, which was resurrected last year after being initially founded in 2015. It was the perfect match for what we were looking for – to illustrate the diversity of the pathways offered by the school, what better way than to interview its main representatives: you, the HEC alumni!

Each generation of United choses a specific focus for their project. The one of the previous generation was on sustainable entrepreneurship. Going back to the roots of the project given that HEC United has mainly interviewed French people from the MiM in the past, our focus will be on the Diversity of HEC alumni. We will break down this Diversity into 5 main areas: cultural diversity, social diversity, career diversity, gender diversity, and diversity of curricula at HEC. We will leave in September for a 6-month trip that will be centred this year on three major regions: Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

For the next steps, we will be preparing our trip following two main directions in parallel: contacting alumni and fundraising. We would like to send a massive thank you to all the HEC departments and HEC Alumni for their support and advice. We are currently looking for sponsors and corporate partners, so do feel free to contact us at association.hecunited@hec.edu if you would like to help us or even go for a small chat on a personal basis: we will be very happy to discuss with you! And, in any case, dear alumni, your help will be precious to us: throughout our trip, we will be looking for alumni to interview in order to collect your stories, discuss your experiences and spend some good time together. You can follow our project on United’s LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram accounts, and you are very welcome to contact us directly on our personal LinkedIn accounts if you want to chat with us. Looking forward to meeting you on the other side of the world, over a drink or a coffee, we hope to see you soon!
