Anne-Laure Kiechel (H.99), a renowned French economist, has established herself as a leading figure in the field of sovereign debt markets and advising governments. With over 25 years of experience in top-tier institutions and collaborations with governments worldwide, she combines technical expertise with strategic vision to tackle global economic challenges.

Her international outlook, shaped by a childhood marked by frequent relocations due to her father’s humanitarian career, has profoundly influenced her journey. Initially considering a career in medicine, she ultimately pursued studies in management and economics at HEC Paris, later earning a master’s degree in mathematics from the Sorbonne and studying at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Anne-Laure began her career in 1999 at Lehman Brothers, working in New York, London, and Paris. She led capital markets and financing activities across multiple regions, experiencing firsthand the subprime crisis and the collapse of the bank in 2008. In 2009, she joined Rothschild & Cie, where she played a key role in establishing and growing the sovereign advisory department. Under her leadership, the department became a major player in advising states on debt management and economic policy.

In 2016, she was appointed advisor to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, assisting the country during the European Union financial aid program and negotiations with international creditors. This experience solidified her reputation as an expert in complex economic situations.

Building on this expertise, Anne-Laure founded Global Sovereign Advisory (GSA) in 2019, an independent firm specializing in strategic, financial, and economic advice to states. Based in Paris and Abu Dhabi, GSA now manages over 30 mandates and serves clients including Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Guinea. Its team of more than 40 consultants tackles complex issues, from restructuring public debt to developing sustainable economic policies.

Anne-Laure Kiechel is also deeply committed to academic and philanthropic initiatives. She launched a chair on sovereign debt at Sciences Po Paris, aimed at advancing research on public financing and sustainable economic practices. Additionally, she created the Youthonomics Index, which evaluates opportunities available to young people in different countries, reflecting her dedication to intergenerational equity.

In 2022, she was appointed a member of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy, contributing to global sustainable development strategies. Anne-Laure is also active in the cultural sphere, supporting prestigious institutions like the Paris Opera and the Salzburg Festival.

Her influence has been widely recognized: in 2018, she was listed among the most influential French figures in the world by Vanity Fair, alongside leaders like Emmanuel Macron. In November 2023, she was named a Knight of the National Order of Merit, honoring her exceptional contributions to international economic advising.

A visionary, Anne-Laure Kiechel advocates for bold and sustainable public policies. In an op-ed for Le Monde, she called for the renationalization of French public debt, inspired by Italy under Mario Monti. She also emphasizes the critical need to invest in strategic sectors like education, which she views as the foundation of sustainable economic development.

Her career represents a rare blend of technical expertise, societal commitment, and a drive to positively influence the economic and social trajectories of nations.
